  • Ocean city is a horrible place to vacation

Think twice before visiting ocean city Maryland. The beaches are extremely dirty, the crabs are of poor quality, most of the hotels are run down filthy & nasty, and the police are always looking to ticket tourists to pull in revenue. I literally saw five cop cars back to back ticketing people. Also, the crime rate is high, especially vehicle break-ins. If you think you will have a peaceful nights sleep, think again, honking horns throughout all hours of the night, even if you are not near the boardwalk. Ocean city is a joke not a real vacation destination spot to take your family. If you see the commercials advertised on TV, it is because the city is desperate to pull in money. It is a tourist trap looking to take your money. There are plenty of other beaches around. Take my advice and stay away from Ocean City, the poor mans vacation hole. You'll end up having more unrealized expenses and leave dissatisfied with regrets. Just spend a little bit more time researching for a better vacation spot.

Yes, we actually cut our vacation a day short. We couldn't wait to leave, we were more excited to leave than we were before getting there.

Then for you at least a different destination might be better. That was a pretty broad brush you used. Apparently you were able to stay in all of the hotels/motels in OC, and eat crabs from all the crab places, all during one short vacation. Maybe you should try Atlantic city next time....things are so much nicer there.

That is why I said most of the hotels and restaurants, but I have now come to the conclusion that it pertains to all of them after talking to friends and family who have also made the huge mistake of visiting ocean city. You must have a vested interest in ocean city, I guess you work for or own an establishment in ocean city, or are possibly the caretaker of this website. Well listen, if the truth hurts then get it together. Rehobeth and Betheny Beachs are right up the street and they are 10 times cleaner, organized and maintained than Ocean City. Ocean city is a joke. Over the years I have stayed and ate at, as I said most hotels and resturaunts and I am tired of substandard vacation spots, plus there is no parking and the police are always ticketing instead of arresting vandles and burglars. Ocean city is the worst place to vacation at, hands down. If people are looking for an inexpensive getaway, Annapolis is another option, they can visit St. Michael's with a wonderful fairy ride. There are so many nicer places to visit than ocean city. Again, to anyone reading this post, don't waste your time and especially your hard earned money, just do a little more research before listening to the BS commercial ads. You and your family will be glad you did. Don't waste your life your precious vacation time with loved ones on ocean city, create real beautiful memories with your loved ones at a place that actually doesn't cater to drunken teenagers and rundown business establishments. Ocean city is for teenagers that have little to no spending money that get wasted and mess around by being obnoxious and belligerent, playing loud music and getting in fights. Think about that kind of horrible atmosphere, especially if you have children.

Also, most of the local natives of ocean city are rude and have no class. It is a fake Las Vegas without any real attractions, entertainment or casinos and all of the trash. Poor excuse for a vacation destination. Also, keep in mind the grulling drive, once you get down there you are stuck with that decision. I have talked to so many other people that have the same opinion. Anyway, just do your research and don't pay any attention to the commercials ads that promote Ocean City.

OK.....I have been reading this forum off and on for a couple years but have never had the desire to register. The only good thing about "Honest opinion's" post is that it will motivate people like me to register. This post was written just for the purpose of ripping OC while obviously wanting to push for another agenda...i.e.location. The OP has not mentioned one hotel or restaurant where he suffered such terrible conditions. I have two theories. 1) The Op has never been to Ocean City....hence the comparison to Vegas and lack of "real casinos"....actually OC has no casinos.....there is one in west OC. My guess is he/she is from Jersey (and was expecting an Atlantic City experience).....he/she should at least know how to spell Rehoboth or BB, if they are going to try to convince you they have been there. Unless he/she is 135 years old they have not stayed at MOST of the hotels and eaten at MOST of the restaurants in town.

"Most of the natives of OC are rude and have no class" Based on your spelling...kettle/black. I can assure you IF you really did visit OC this summer....you probably never ran into an "OC native"

OR 2) The Op got a ticket while visiting OC...lol. I have been coming to OC for 35 years and am down there almost every weekend (year round). I may be jinxing myself but I have NEVER been pulled over by an OC cop. Why? Because I follow the laws.

So in closing....thank you for contributing to the OC economy.....thank you for encouraging me to sign up....and lastly, we will see you in OC next summer. Enjoy yourself....just slow down!!!

This is ridiculous, I don't have a hidden agenda. I was born and raised in Maryland, and live three hours away. You are the one with a hidden agenda. You said you have been watching this forum for years and just now joined with in hours of my posting, please I don't buy that. You are the same person that resonded earlier. You just opened up an account to make it look like you have supporters. You are probably a business owner that is trying to drive people to Ocean City or like I said you are the caretaker of this website. Anyone that has been to ocean city and reads what I wrote, my opinion of things, knows what has been written is the truth. Also, everyone makes spelling mistakes, for you to criticize me like that just shows that you have poor character, supporting my opinion that local resident from Ocean City are rude. Instead of criticizing an honest person that gave an honest opinion, try focusing on the problem in order to find a solution. Convince the city to clean up the beaches and the riffraff that contribute to crime. Again, this is ridiculous. I'm done.

I think he mean to post his review here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum...ew_Jersey.html

Honest Opinion, your rant has cost you credibility. Enjoy!

Here's something I do agree with:

terp84alum/Ken "What's with the restaurants this year? Just about every "server" outside of pizza joints we had this week didn't know the menu and the bathrooms were disgusting. I know this sound cliche, but wouldn't you think every restaurant owner would have seen at least one episode of Restaurant Impossible? These are pretty basic things that cost nothing.

I'll post my dining report over the weekend but I felt this deserved its own thread in hopes that some owners/managers/employees make get something from it."

This is from your own posting. So I guess I'm not the only one that has had problems.

Listen, I just want a nice place to take my family. Back in 1999 it was nice, but now it's not. Over the years it has deminished, possibly due to the economy. It would be nice to go and visit a place that is close without all the headaches and disappointments. If you live there, then do something about it. I want to be able to enjoy it once again. Who wouldn't want to have a nice vacation spot that is close by. I hope postings from disappointed tourists motivates the city to step it up and clean up their act. Best!

I grew up going to OC. My family had businesses in OC many years ago. I continue to take my family to OC. I don't share the same opinion as HO. The place is not dirty, there are tons of great restaurants, I've never been hassled by police or been a victim of a crime, we have never had headaches or disappointments. OC is not for everyone. During peak season, it's packed. With this comes noise and minor inconveniences. If OC were what Honest Opinion claims, no one would come.

I'm an Ocean City Insider and it's my job to keep up with places and goings on in Ocean City MARYLAND. I'm there A LOT and I try and stay at as many different hotels as I can. I always give my HONEST opinion, good, bad, or in between. Our latest trip was the last week of August for a week in a condo on 77th St. instead of a hotel this time. We visited the boardwalk several times, walked all around the back streets, the bay, and we frequented all parts of OC and even went to Fenwick and up to Bethany.
NOT ONCE did we see anything offensive (ie, the pole dancer), the was a noticable lack of offensive t shirts on the boardwalk, police presence was everywhere and there wasn't one time I didn't feel safe or enjoy myself. The boardwalk had some litter blowing on it (normal), seagulls were in abundance, the Purple Moose was carding every person who went inside and we sat and watched to see if any younger ones snuck in (none did while we were there). We didn't see any drunks walking the streets, no fights, nothing that concerned me. I'm not trying to paint a rosy picture here because it does still have things that bothered me. The beach WAS dirty where we were staying. Cigarette butts and plastics in the sand made me nauseous. They still sweep the beach at night, but not close enough to the water to pick up the stuff there. So that was a big disappointment. And there were lots of dogs and skateboarders on the boardwalk and neither is allowed till after October 1, and none of the police did anything about it. So OC is NOT perfect.
As for the hotels, all of the ones we stayed in this year were clean, well taken care of, polite staff, and when I needed anything all I had to do was ask.
I'd like to know where you have stayed that you found things so bad. If you stayed at one of the Coastal Highway hotels, yes you'll hear the road noise. Also if you're there during a car event you'll get more than your normal noise. But I've never found it to be an issue when I'm in my hotel room with my door locked and the air conditioning on. And if you're on the balcony at night or day and you hear the noise, then what's the difference? You're not sleeping.
I agree with the other posters. Ocean City is not the place for you. I don't see a purpose to bash such a wonderful town and try and dissuade others from going there. If you're looking for Utopia, I haven't found it yet. But I wish you luck.

WOW, I must be a very lucky person. I've been taking my family down there since 1999 and not once have I been held up, had my car broken into, been arrested or strip searched by the police. We've enjoyed excellent crabs from a multitude of places. We've had excellent meals almost every time. While we don't stay in many hotels, the times that we have have been quality stays.
